See drone video of SpaceX landing a Falcon 9 at Cape Canaveral

On Sunday morning, SpaceX hoisted a spacecraft, named the Dragon, toward the International Space Station, and the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket returned to Earth without issue.

The launch is the first time SpaceX used the LC-39A launchpad at the Kennedy Space Centre since it leased it from NASA three years ago. SpaceX resumed testing with a successful launch and landing from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on January 14. The pad was last used for NASA's final shuttle mission almost six years ago. The complex has a rich past: It was used to launch the Apollo moon missions.

The company plans to change that this spring, as early as mid-March, with the launch of the SES-10 communications satellite to geostationary orbit.

NASA has high hopes that SpaceX, as well as Boeing, will be able to launch astronauts to and from the space station. "Baby came back", SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted on Instagram after the successful landing. The first stage was on its way back to Earth, while the second stage was transporting the Dragon spacecraft.

SpaceX had chose to delay the mission on Saturday, just 13 seconds before launch, because of concerns about the rocket's steering system.

According to the Associated Press, NASA was watching the launch closely before it clears SpaceX to carry NASA astronauts.

"Dragon will be filled with more than 5,000 pounds of supplies and payloads, including critical materials to directly support dozens of the more than 250 science and research investigations", SpaceX said.

Loud cheers could be heard from the SpaceX mission control room as the rocket touched down in one piece. On Friday, during a news conference near the launch pad, company president Gwynne Shotwell acknowledged that the last two years were "painful" for SpaceX, adding that it is hard to make money when you're not flying.

The Falcon 9 was scheduled for takeoff on the Saturday, but Mr Musk said that he and his team noted a technical anomaly just seconds before the originally scheduled launch.
