Haitian bus plows into crowd, at least 38 people dead

The incident occurred in the city of Gonaives 90 miles outside the capital of Port-au-Prince

At least 38 people were killed and 13 others injured in northern Haiti after a bus plowed into a festival crowd before dawn Sunday, in what local authorities said was a hit and run incident.

Ford Henry, a deputy representative for the region, said that a total of 34 people were killed at the scene and an another four people died in hospital.

The bus, which was coming from Cap Haitien to the capital Port-au-Prince, crashed outside the town of Gonaives, the authorities said. Hundreds of people are killed or injured every year on the roads which are in poor condition.

He rammed the bus into a band of street musicians, leaving dozens dead, according to unconfirmed reports.

Earlier, the bus hit two pedestrians, killing one. Drivers in Haiti who are involved in accidents rarely stop at the scene because they fear attack by local mobs seeking to extract vigilante justice.
