United Kingdom parliament passes Brexit Bill and opens way to triggering Article 50

United Kingdom parliament passes Brexit Bill and opens way to triggering Article 50

However, Downing Street sources have said that would not happen this week and the prime minister was expected to wait until the end of the month to officially notify the European Union of the UK's intention to leave, thus beginning what was expected to be a two-year process.

Theresa May has been granted the power to formally start the Brexit process whenever she wants, after parliament approved legislation on Monday night granting the government the power to invoke Article 50.

That would begin up to two years of exit negotiations with the EU.

But beyond saying she will begin the formal process later this month, May has yet to answer the question of exactly when, and end nine months of guesswork as to how her government will approach the uncharted territory of leaving the EU.

The referendum also brought the resignation of former Prime Minister David Cameron, who during a re-election campaign had promised to hold the vote.

Lawsuit Filed Over Death Linked to Raw Milk Cheese
The people made ill by the cheese ranged in age from less than 1 year old to 89 years old, with a median age of 55. He died after suffering a stroke 23 days after he was hospitalized with Listeria food poisoning.

Concerns over a second referendum vote will tend to unsettle Sterling to some extent even though there is no possibility of a vote within the next 18 months and the United Kingdom government remains strongly opposed to a another vote.

The House of Lords has added two amendments to May's Bill, one guaranteeing the rights of European Union citizens living in Britain, the other for politicians to be given a meaningful vote on a final Brexit deal.

'Whilst it has been badged as a meaningful vote, the reality is there are some who would seek to use this to overturn the result of the referendum, ' he said.

There is speculation that May could wait to trigger Article 50 until after a Mar 25 summit in Rome to mark the EU's 60th birthday, a moment it hopes will emphasise the bloc's unity.

The Government has committed to triggering Article 50 by the end of March but will not give further detail on the timing.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says He's Not Running for US Senate
There's also been an increase in the number of centrist office holders of the type that Schwarzenegger has praised, he added. "[Schwarzenegger is] someone who could play a huge role if Republicans wanted any hope of having relevance in California ".

"We are now on the threshold of the most important negotiation for our country in a generation".

The bill still requires the formality of royal assent from Queen Elizabeth II to become law, which could come on Tuesday.

Mrs May told the Commons that she remained on track for the Brexit timetable she set out six months ago. A handful of pro-EU Conservatives expressed their unhappiness, then abstained from the vote.

Later in the Lords, with Brexit Secretary David Davis watching from the bar of the House, a Liberal Democrat move to reinsert the amendment on the rights of European Union nationals living in the United Kingdom was rejected by 274 votes to 135, Government majority 139.

Mrs May's official spokesman played down suggestions that the PM had delayed notification due to Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's announcement that she plans to stage a second independence referendum in the run-up to the expected date of Brexit in spring 2019.

Mr Davis said that allowing the amendment would give politicians a chance to fight for us to remain in the EU.
