Texas Senate Approves Bathroom Bill

Georgia’s breweries and distilleries are one step closer to being able to sell their products directly to customers

The Senate gave final approval Tuesday to a bill aimed to further combat Kentucky's prescription drug epidemic.

Over vociferous objections from the chamber's Democratic minority, the Texas Senate voted 21-10 late Tuesday afternoon in favor of state Senator Lois Kolkhorst's so-called "bathroom bill".

While conservative lawmakers celebrate the Senate passage that is a foregone conclusion, the bill faces bipartisan opposition in the House where lawmakers are more anxious about the potential for business boycotts should the measure pass.

Democrats challenged Kolkhorst on the unintended consequences of the bill. Carlos Uresti (D-San Antonio) said three conventions had already said they were no longer considering San Antonio an option because of the bill.

Transgender people are four times more likely to be victims of sexual assault than the general population, and up to a third of those report being harassed by law enforcement when they do report crimes.

"Do you not see how much damage this bill is going to do?" she asked. Senate Bill 4, which was approved in the Senate last month, would punish local and state governments that don't cooperate with federal officials to enforce immigration laws.
