U.S. to ban some airline passengers from carrying electronics after 'terror threat'

Electronics are now banned on Royal Jordanian flights into the U.S

Passengers travelling from about a dozen countries will be barred from carrying most electronic devices on US-bound flights, officials tell USA media.

While CNN said the Department of Homeland Security had no comment, the US State Department had confirmed that relevant countries and airlines were being informed of the device ban.

About a dozen carriers will be affected but these do not include American airlines, the official added.

Royal Jordanian Airlines said in a tweet on Monday that US -bound passengers would be barred from carrying most electronic devices aboard aircraft starting Tuesday at the request of USA officials, including those that transit through Canada.

There was no immediate explanation for why the airline was taking the action beyond saying it was imposing the ban "following instructions from concerned USA departments".

In a exceptionally rapid response, a DHS spokesman returned Quartz's emailed request for comment in 57 seconds, saying "We have no comment on potential security precautions".

The announcement was made via Twitter Monday afternoon.
