North Korea says Syria airstrikes prove its nukes justified

"The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and intolerable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn it", KCNA news agency quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry as saying.

Along with its rapidly advancing nuclear and long-range missile capabilities, the North has its artillery and short-range missiles trained on Seoul, the capital of USA ally South Korea and a city of more than 10 million people. The North called the airstrikes "absolutely unpardonable" and said it proves that its nuclear weapons are justified to protect the country against Washington's "evermore reckless moves for a war".

Two days after hitting a Syrian airbase to punish the Assad regime for a suspected chemical attack, the United States is flexing its military muscle again - this time for the attention of North Korea.

Critics say that tourism to the North helps to bolster a regime accused of widespread human rights abuses as well as its weapons ambitions, which include developing a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

U.S. Navy ships are a common presence in the Korean Peninsula region and serve in part as a show of force.

"We will bolster up in every way our capability for self-defense to cope with the USA evermore reckless moves for a war and defend ourselves with our own force", KCNA added.

In recent weeks, North Korea has launched at least seven missiles, tested rocket engines for a possible intercontinental ballistic missile, and threatened war while preparing for what could be another nuclear test.

In appearances on the Sunday news shows, Tillerson said advances in North Korea's ballistic missile program concerned the US the most.

The response came with the grand bluster normally included in statements by North Korea.

Trump has said China, with its ties to North Korea, should deal with its neighbor, but that the USA was prepared to act on its own if necessary.
