Samsung heir accused of bribery, perjury as trial opens

Samsung employees on average hold their jobs for 10 years

Samsung will report fiscal first quarter results on April 26 after the market close.

The hefty profits highlight Samsung's resilience after the embarrassing recall of its fire-prone Note 7 smartphone a year ago.

The Apple Inc rival has rapidly recovered from last year's costly failure of its fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 device, despite a political scandal involving Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee who appeared in a Seoul court on Friday facing charges including bribing ousted president Park Geun-hye.

Syrian teenager thanks US President Trump for his 'action' after chemical attack
He also vowed then to eject the 12,000 Syrian refugees now living in the U.S.: "If I win, they're going back ". Trump to immediately rescind his ban on refugees.

The first-quarter operating profit was above the market's earlier estimate of 9.43 trillion won, compiled by Yonhap Infomax, the financial news arm of Yonhap News Agency, on 22 South Korean brokerage houses.

Analysts also expect Samsung to post even higher profits in the second quarter, likely a record, due to the launch of the Galaxy S8 and continued demand for its semiconductors. Several leaders of prominent chaebols, or family-run companies like Samsung in South Korea, have faced similar situations, including Lee's father, Lee Kun-hee.

Song said Samsung was unaware of Park's friend, Choi Soon-sil, until after the scandal over their relationship and allegations of influence-peddling surfaced late previous year.

Trade talks were Richard Sherman's idea
All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman was the one who reportedly initiated trade talks with the Seattle Seahawks. There are various reports out there about what the Seahawks are looking to get in return.

Lee's defence lawyers however said the payments to the Choi were charitable contributions for sports and culture development that Samsung was obliged to make under pressure from officials, and not bribes.

One of the favours Lee allegedly sought from president Park was state approval for a controversial merger of two Samsung units in 2015, seen as a key step to ensure a smooth transfer of power to him.

Millions of South Koreans taking part in weekly street rallies demanding Park's removal have also called for the arrest of the tycoons involved in the scandal, including the leaders of Hyundai, SK and Lotte. Samsung Electronics said Friday its first-quarter profit jumped 48 percent, a better-than-ex.

Yankees put catcher Gary Sanchez on 10-day disabled list
After a two-run single by Ronald Torreyes put NY up 2-0 in the second inning, the Yankees upped their lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Baltimore is assured of a 10th straight series win against NY at Camden Yards, a streak that began after the 2013 season.

Analysts said strong demand for mobile chips and displays for smartphones fueled the stellar profit during the typically slow season for smartphones and television sets. It is scheduled to give more details including quarterly net profit later in the month. The profit is beating expectations since strong memory chip prices likely padded margins.
