Bill introduced to make same-sex marriage illegal in North Carolina again

Three Republicans in North Carolina's House of Representatives have introduced a bill to reverse the Supreme Court's marriage equality ruling in the state.

Rep. Larry Pittman (R-Cabarrus), Rep. Michael Speciale (R-Beaufort) and Rep. Carl Ford (R-Cabarrus) are the primary sponsors of House Bill 780.

N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted his opposition to the bill Tuesday.

Hungary's president signs bill aimed at Soros-founded school
Yee said "the United States does not engage in such agreements about. how universities are going to be run in foreign countries". The US State Department has expressed its concerns about the legislation and the CEU's ability to continue operating in Hungary.

That ruling struck down North Carolina's Amendment One, passed in 2012, that said marriage was between a man and a woman. But its introduction comes just as the state is trying leave the damage of the anti-LGBTI law known as House Bill 2 (HB2) behind them. Issues like abortion and marriage equality are settled law, and no temper tantrum bill from a North Carolina legislature will change that.

The "Uphold Historical Marriage Act" has been nearly universally panned, with the Charlotte Observer rightly noting that the mere introduction of the bill has offered an easy opportunity for the nation to "once again" start "mocking North Carolina".

A yard sign urging against the constitutional amendment that prohibited same-sex marriage.

Will Bill O'Reilly survive advertiser defections?

The dust has barely settled since North Carolina partially repealed its controversial "bathroom bill" two weeks ago, but lawmakers there are already proposing another bold new way to curb LGBTQ rights. "We need more LGBT protections, not fewer", Cooper wrote.

The bill arrived at a sensitive moment for North Carolina, which has for much of the past year been a magnet for criticism and economic boycotts due to another bill.

It is unclear at this time how much support HB728 has, but it is important to note that Republicans have the supermajority in the North Carolina House and Senate. The ultimate impact of the bill will be a small chapter in the ongoing culture war in the state, a response to the ACC and NCAA's impact in one of the state's most divisive political issues in decades.
