Officer who fatally shot boy, 15, in Texas is fired

The police officer who shot and killed unarmed teen Jordan Edwards has been fired, the Balch Springs Police Department confirmed Wednesday.

Three days after he killed an unarmed 15-year-old boy, a Balch Springs police officer was sacked. "After reviewing the findings I have made the decision to terminate Roy Oliver's employment with the Balch Springs Police Department", Haber told reporters at a press conference.

Police chief Jonathan Haber cited department policy violations for the termination on Tuesday, without specifying exactly what those violations were.

But on Monday, Haber reversed course and said, after reviewing video, the vehicle was driving away from police.

Haber said officers in the town are discouraged from firing at moving vehicles even when a auto is headed towards them, with guidelines saying that cops should "attempt to move out of its path, if possible, instead of discharging a firearm at it or any of its occupants".

As officers exited the house, they encountered the vehicle backing out onto a main road and driving away despite their attempts to tell the driver to stop, the new statement said.

The family is hoping Oliver is charged with murder, Merritt said, even though they know the Dallas County Sheriff's Office investigation could take months.

The officer who shot and killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards has been fired. The cause of death was listed as a rifle wound to the head, according to ABC affiliate WFAA in Dallas. Edwards's family has raised $102,677 from the public so far in a memorial fund. Police had gone inside a house where a party was underway when they heard gunshots and ran outside.

One officer fired a rifle into the vehicle as it was driving away from the party.

"Not only have Jordan's brothers lost their best friend; they also witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless, murder", his family said in a statement.

Lee Merritt, an attorney for Edwards and his family thanked Haber for admitting missteps in retelling the incident.

"We support the Balch Springs Police Department, but we do not support this officer", said Angela Singletary, who's a member of the city's Citizens Patrol.

He also declined to say who was under investigation in the Russia-Trump associate investigation. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, right, and the committee's ranking member Sen.

Police later said, however, that they had misspoken in recounting what occurred and that it appeared as though the vehicle Edwards was in was driving away from the officers when shots were fired, based on footage from police body cameras. "Their young lives will be forever altered".

They also urged calm, and asked that no violence against police officers be carried out in Edwards' name.

Haber declined to say whether any shots were fired or whether the boys in the vehicle were armed, citing the ongoing investigation. In 86 of the cases, officers say the person was in possession of a weapon, most often a firearm. And he was a social butterfly who was the one who wanted to go to the party, she said.

"As law enforcement approached the house, they saw the lights".

Crockett said Jordan was a teenager who was both interested in academics and sports.
