Trump praised Australia's universal healthcare system - Bernie Sanders had a hilarious reaction

Democrats, and more than a handful Republicans, say Trump's health care plan will leave millions of Americans without insurance and raise private costs for those with pre-existing conditions.

"It's going to be fantastic health care", Trump said, referring to the American Health Care Act that just passed the House.

Trump said he was "so confident" that the measure would pass the Senate and vowed that premiums and deductibles would come down.

Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, who have long advocated for a government-run universal health care option, similar to Australia's Medicare system.

President Trump and the Prime Minister also talked about the importance of building stronger economic bonds through increased trade and investment.

March has spent a lot of time covering the U.S. health care system for an Australian audience, and she says she finds it "mind boggling", "expensive", and "convoluted".

White House officials said the US-Australia refugee deal still stood, but remained a "raw nerve" for Mr Trump.

It is now impossible to determine the breadth of coverage that the AHCA would provide because House Republicans voted on the latest version of the bill before the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) could provide an estimate of its impact on the health care market.

The White House later said Trump was simply being nice to an ally and does not think the United States should adopt Australia's healthcare approach. The Congressional Budget Office hasn't run the numbers on the latest version of the Republican health care program, but the earlier version of the bill before the latest amendments found that 24 million more people would be uninsured by 2026 if it became law.

'I think he believes that they have a good healthcare system for Australia, ' she said.

Mr Trump went on to say he and Mr Turnbull "reaffirmed the tremendous friendship" between the nations during their meeting.

Trump's first conversation with Turnbull came in a heated January phone call in which the newly inaugurated president became upset over a deal between the countries for the U.S.to accept refugees for Australia.

"It's great to be with you", Mr Trump told the prime minister. Since then, the two leaders have worked to move beyond the phone call.

Turnbull agreed: "That's exactly right".

But later in the night Mr Trump admitted the call was "testy".

Mr Trump came to power vowing to halt illegal immigrants entering the United States and forcing refugees to undergo extreme vetting. During the visit, Turnbull pledged to continue the "intimate" relationship between the two countries.
