Texas Governor Just Signed Strict Anti-Sanctuary City Legislation

Gov. Greg Abbott removed the cap from his signing pen and placed his signature on the controversial bill that would ban sanctuary cities in Texas, officially making it state law, in a Facebook Live video Sunday night from his office.

The Texas measure - which follows a move by President Donald Trump's administration to withhold funds from areas that don't comply with immigration laws that could lead to deportation - also threatens law enforcers with jail time if they don't work with federal immigration agents. Abbott said key provisions of the bill had already been tested at the U.S. Supreme Court, which struck down several components of Arizona's law but allowed the provision permitting police to ask about immigration status.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law a bill that bans so-called sanctuary cities.

SB 4 was also opposed by top cops in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, Fort Worth, and San Antonio, as well as the Texas Police Chiefs Association. But he said his deputies won't ask people they stop on the street for their immigration papers. The statute prohibits discrimination in the enforcement of immigration laws by "race, color, religion, language or national origin" unless permitted by the state and federal constitutions.

"MALDEF will do its level best, in court and out, to restore Texas, the state where MALDEF was founded, to its greater glory, and to help Texas to overcome 'Abbott's Folly, ' " he said in a written statement.

The organization's attorney, Luis Vera, said the town has had a "safe haven" ordinance -which directly conflicts with the new law- since 1999.

They're concerned the law will have a chilling effect on people in the Hispanic community who may be reluctant to come forward and report crimes.

Addendum: The border down of El Cenizo, its mayor and the Maverick County sheriff are the first to challenge the law in court.

Between 2008 and 2012, ICE requested local law enforcement to hold 834 USA citizens, some of whom subsequently spent days in jail as a result.

"This law does not keep our community safe; in fact, it goes against public safety", Hernandez said. If a Texas sheriff or other law enforcement authority can not lawfully honor an ICE detainer, unsafe people will slip through the cracks of the justice system and back into our communities.
