European stocks are dipping despite Macron's decisive election victory

French President-elect Emmanuel Macron celebrates on the stage at his victory rally near the Louvre in Paris France

Merkel congratulated Macron on Sunday's "spectacular" election victory and said he "carried the hopes of millions" in France and Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Neither is Macron's victory a victory yet for globalization or free markets.

The German leader and her government had thrown their support behind Macron against far-right and anti-EU challenger Marine Le Pen during the campaign for the French presidential election.

Here in the U.S., President Trump is weighing in on the French vote.

If another party wins a majority, Macron could be pressured to choose a prime minister from that party, a situation the French call "cohabitation". Macron is the first president of modern France elected as an independent.

Dozens hurt, 1 dead in violent day of protests in Venezuela
Dozens of people have been injured and a 27-year-old man was killed during another day of violent clashes in Venezuela's capital. The new tactic has been dubbed the "Poopootov" in a play on the Molotov cocktails often seen at streets protests in Venezuela.

After a resounding victory in Sunday's runoff, Emmanuel Macron will be sworn in as France's next President at the Elysee palace on May 14, outgoing President Francois Hollande said.

Republicans vice-president Laurent Wauquiez emphasised Macron's vulnerability, noting he had been a grudging choice for many voters, who did not support his programme but were anxious to block Le Pen.

"The voting trends in Bengaluru for the elections was representative of the global trends, with most votes for Emmanuel Macron", she said, adding that Le Pen played with people's fears and insecurities.

Martin Quencez of think-tank the German Marshall Fund of the United States argued that in France "the structural issues behind the populist votes are yet to be tackled".

Despite the "very unusual character" of this election, "historically, the French tend to favour the party of the elected president", she said. President-elect Macron, with his full-throated support for a reinvigorated European Union, is not the Kremlin's pick. "With legislative elections still to come, there is certainly no room for complacency".

Eurovision: Pop, politics and a dancing ape _ but no Russia
Sundnes was later removed from his spot on the official Norwegian jury for the Eurovision Song Contest . The first ten finalists will join the so-called Big Five and hosts Ukraine in the Grand Final.

It's nothing new. Violent protests, egg-throwing and heckling disrupted the campaigns of both the president-elect and his defeated far-right rival Marine Le Pen.

He expressed Iran's "readiness to constantly exchange views [with the French officials] on bilateral, regional and worldwide issues" and hoped that obstacles in the way of enhanced cooperation would be removed during Macron's tenure.

"The French have chosen a new president", Le Pen told supporters.

Despite not winning the French presidency with their candidate Marine Le Pen, the Front National may still make huge gains in the French national assembly where they now have only two deputies.

"To govern effectively, Macron needs the backing of a parliamentary majority (289 seats or more), but the chance of his movement being able to build one, from zero seats, appears slim", the analyst said.
