NASA won't use astronauts in test of new Mars rocket

Study skeptical of crew on first Space Launch System flight: reports

NASA determined it is technically capable of launching crew on EM-1, but after evaluating cost, risk and technical factors in a project of this magnitude, it would be hard to accommodate changes needed to add crew at this point in mission planning. CBSN's Meg Oliver and Elaine Quijano show us the impressive video. However, a lot of technologies would have to be accelerated, such as a life support system to keep the crew alive and abort system that could save the crew in case of an emergency during flight.

To include astronauts in the first launch, the Orion capsule would require life support and a fully working launch abort system, which is created to help the crew capsule escape a failure.

NY [U.S.], May 13: NASA will be launching its Space Launch System in 2019, but has ruled out putting a crew on board. However, "we decided that while it was technically feasible, we decided that the baseline plan we had in place was the best plan", he continued.

The delay in the EM-1 launch will affect the next launch, EM-2, as well. More generally, he argued that NASA and its industry team have already completed "phenomenal" work both on SLS and Orion and are making good progress building a complex system.

Iraq, Algeria support extension of oil production cuts
Saudi Arabia told Asian refiners of its first cuts in crude allocations since OPEC's output reduction took effect in January. Crude inventories fell 5.2 million barrels in the week to May 5, the US Energy Information Administration said .

The unmanned test flight had been scheduled for November 2018 but was pushed back after the White House asked for a feasibility study of the cost, safety and technical constraints. The first launch had been targeted for next year, but now won't happen until 2019 when NASA will send an unoccupied Orion capsule to the vicinity of the moon for a three-week trial run. A February tornado damaged a New Orleans facility where the rocket is assembled, and a construction accident last week irreparably damaged an oxygen tank intended for the EM-1 rocket. Unlike the EM-1 rocket, the Block 1B version of the SLS would feature a more powerful, human-rated "exploration upper stage", or EUS.

The press conference announcement lists two speakers: Lightfoot and NASA Associate Administrator for Human Explorations and Operations William Gerstenmaier. Just getting EM-1 off the ground will be hard enough.

So for now, it seems that NASA will stick with its original strategy for debuting the SLS: doing an uncrewed flight first, followed by a crewed mission.

Putting a crew aboard would have driven that cost even higher. "We knew both of those had to be there, because we had certain components that just were not there".

2nd of 4 Confederate monuments removed
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu took photographs of the Jefferson Davis statue being removed from its pedestal overnight. They say documents show the statue belongs to a state agency that oversees the park where the statue is located.

Part of this has to do with what the goals behind EM-1: "really push as hard as we can" all navigation and propulsion systems on Orion, Gerstenmaier told reporters.

Currently, the SLS engine section structural test hardware is being shipped via barge to the Marshall Space Flight Center for testing. That upper stage is not now human rated. The SLS is similar in size to the Saturn V rockets used in the Apollo program but generate far more thrust.

"Well, we want to try to do it during my first term or at worst during my second term so we will have to speed that up a little bit ok?"
