BC Green leader begins talks with other parties

The Liberals needed 44 seats for a majority, but they only got 43, surrendering 41 to the NDP and three to the Green Party. Peter Fassbender, another cabinet minister, also lost his seat in Surrey-Fleetwood.

Kathryn Harrison says there's no disputing the Greens won two ridings that were previously NDP and may have siphoned off some centre-left votes in at least one other riding, clearing a path for the Liberals to win there.

"But in eight other ridings, the increase in the Green vote share came disproportionately from the Liberals share and allowed the NDP to win when they arguably wouldn't have otherwise".

Her government has banned workplace requirements that require women to wear high heels, a move credited to Weaver's initiative. "British Columbians voted today for proportional representation".

"The most important issue for us right now, the No. 1 deal breaker, is banning big money in B.C. politics", he said. But the mood became more tense as the evening progressed, and faces became more serious as the NDP began to catch up.

Campaign financing and electoral reform is one policy that aligns with NDP policy.

NDP leader John Horgan at rally in Hotel 540 in Kamloops March 27, 2017. "It is my intention to continue to lead British Columbia", she added.

Horgan says his staff have been following up with the Greens with more plans to meet in the coming days and weeks ahead.

Horgan and Clark have drawn different lessons from Tuesday's results.

In the urban Lower Mainland, however, the Liberals were seen as weak on health care, housing affordability, mass transit and education.

"We understand what compromise means and we're willing to compromise, of course", Weaver said. "That's the back and forth discussions that we would have had". What do we want British Columbia to look like in 4 years, in 10 years, in 40 years? "I think people will be quite happy with him".

While Clark's promise of a booming liquefied natural gas industry has not materialized over the past four years, Clark was able to point to B.C.'s strong economy as proof of the Liberals' financial savvy.

McMaster talks tough on Russian Federation amid Trump-Kremlin dealings
Trump's meeting with Lavrov follows the Russian Federation visit of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to Moscow last month. Several ceasefires have been agreed on since Syria's conflict broke out, but they have failed to stem the fighting.

"LNG is not happening", he said on election night. Minority governments tend to be fractious and short-lived, so it is likely, if the standings do not change, that B.C. will have another election well before the set date four years from now.

But it didn't hold, and before long the parties found themselves locked in a dead heat with 42 seats, a result that held for much of the evening, keeping British Columbians around the province on the edge of their seats.

Negative ads and attacks between the NDP and the Liberals over political fundraising laws that place no limits on corporate and union donations have also been a prime part of the political debate.

That project has already been approved by both the provincial and federal governments, however. All would be at risk in a minority government.

He said in both cases, the minority governments fell apart forcing a subsequent election, with the NDP losing seats in both instances while the Liberals gained majority victories.

"He's going to make a real good MLA", he said. We won't censor or delete comments unless they contain off-topic statements or links, unnecessary vulgarity, false facts, spam or obviously fake profiles.
