Bluestar anniversary: Balwant Singh Rajoana asks Sikh leaders to maintain peace

On the anniversary of the awful Operation Bluestar, pro-Khalistan slogans were raised by a section of Sikhs present at the Golden Temple on Tuesday. The decision of pardon was later withdrawn in wake of strong resentment form the Sikh masses.

However, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of Sikhs, failed in getting enough support for uninterrupted ceremonial message read out by Akal Takht Jathedar Gaini Gurbachan Singh at the conclusion of the event.

Demanding the removal of Gurbachan Singh, Mr Mann accused him of hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community by accepting the apology of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

Several swords wielding Sikhs shouted "Khalistan Zindabad" slogans just when Jathedar (head priest) Giani Gurbachan Singh of the Akal Takht- the highest temporal seat of Sikhism- attempted to address the Sikh community.

The Sarbat Khalsa-appointed "parallel" Jathedars are also expected to reach the Akal Takht on Tuesday to take part in the event. They, however, told the community to free SGPC and other Sikh institutions from "possession" of anti-community people.

There was heavy barricading around the Akal Takht in the premises of Golden Temple by SGPC to prevent suspicious entry inside the Takhat and policemen in mufti were also assisting the task force of SGPC.

On June 6 previous year, pro-Khalistan slogans were once again raised on the Golden Temple premises.

A Sikh rights group has asked the United Nations to set up a tribunal to investigate alleged crimes committed against the community members during the 1984 Operation Blue Star.

As per the government reports, 493 militants and civilians were killed in Operation Bluestar.
