The Justice Department has denied that, saying Sessions stressed to Comey the need to be careful about following appropriate policies.

U.S. lawmakers said Sunday they want answers from U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he testifies this week before the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Russian interference in last year's presidential election.

Mr Shelby chairs the Senate appropriations sub-committee.

Sessions did not specify whether he would testify in an open or closed setting.

The committee "is the most appropriate forum for such matters, as it has been conducting an investigation and has access to relevant, classified information", he added in the letter.

In his testimony on Thursday, Comey accused President Donald Trump of firing him to try to undermine the FBI's investigation of possible collusion by people in Trump's campaign with Russia's alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election. Burr was an vocal supporter of Trump's candidacy and an official adviser to the campaign.

He removed himself after it emerged that he had met at least twice with the Russian ambassador in 2016, though he had testified at his confirmation hearing that he had not had contact with Russians.

The following day, Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation probe.

He also said he would send Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to the appropriations subcommittees in his place to discuss budget matters.

At the conclusion of a February 14 meeting in the White House, Comey testified, Trump urged everyone else but Comey to leave the Oval Office, including Sessions.

It would be "fitting" for the attorney general to appear before Judiciary, Feinstein, the top Democrat on that panel, said on CNN.

Comey said during his testimony that he asked a friend to release contents of the memos he'd written about his conversations with the president to a reporter.

Sessions also was expected to get questions about his involvement in the firing of Comey and the news that he offered his resignation to President Trump at one point recently.

Lawmakers and critics have expressed concern about any possible role by Sessions in either sacking Comey, or in subverting the ongoing investigation by the FBI. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., Sessions said that he had been scheduled to discuss the Justice Department budget before House and Senate committees but it had become clear some members would focus their questions on the Russian Federation investigation.
