Donald Trump confirms he is under investigation for firing James Comey

Donald Trump has appeared to confirm he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, claiming he is being probed for firing FBI director James Comey by the man who told him to do it.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May, and that firing is now reportedly part of an investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice as president.

Rosenstein later appointed Robert Mueller to lead the investigation into ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, which the president has repeatedly labeled a "witch hunt".

"Witch Hunt", the President wrote in his tweet.

As the investigation expands, that raises the possibility that Rosenstein may recuse himself from that role, since he wrote the memo justifying Comey's firing.

However, this has been treated with scepticism given he has frequently been reported killed or wounded over the last three years. Iraq state TV aired live footage showing thick black smoke rising from the Old City, with the sound of gunfire rattling inside.

Hours later, a source close to Mr Trump's outside legal team said the President did not intend his tweet to be confirmation of the investigation but rather was reacting to a Washington Post story.

Speaking to Harris Faulkner, Wallace said Trump once again kept Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation at the top of the headlines.

Trump on Thursday blasted news reports that he was under criminal investigation as a "witch hunt" against him led by some "very bad" people.

The White House has said the president "has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn".

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point.

In a statement many have described as "odd", Rosenstein warned the US public to "exercise caution" before trusting media reports citing anonymous officials, despite the fact that the Trump administration continues to use them in official statements to the media.

I can see why his Vice President Mike Pence has made a decision to lawyer up.

Sessions explained to the Senate Intelligence Committee that Comey's concern pertained to the protocol though which the Department of Justice communicated with the White House.

Trump on Friday said the person conducting that probe was the individual who had told him to dismiss James Comey, who had been at the head of the bureau from 2013 until he was sacked early last month.
