US Military Service Members Wounded In Insider Attack In Afghanistan

Dozens killed and wounded in attack on regional Afghanistan police HQ - officials

Sunday's attack came a day after an Afghan commando fired on USA troops, wounding seven American soldiers.

Such incidents remain relatively rare amid the close cooperation between Afghan and foreign forces, but it is likely to draw increased scrutiny from the Pentagon as it plans to boost troop numbers in Afghanistan.

Sunday's attack was the second terror incident in Gardez within weeks. "Two were killed when they entered (the compound)", an official said.

Abdul Qahar Araam, spokesman for the Afghan army's 209th Corps, had announced that an Afghan soldier shot and killed four USA troops inside the base.

The Pentagon is set to announce it is sending another 4,000 U.S. troops to the country to counter the insurgents.

The U.S. soldiers wounded in the attack were evacuated for treatment, military officials said.

It may be mentioned that two USA soldiers were killed and two others were critically wounded by an Afghan Army commando in Achin district of Nangarhar Afghanistan on June 10, 2017.

Special forces soldiers in the Afghan army, generally referred to as commandos, are much more highly trained than regular troops and work in proximity to US soldiers, including serving as partners in ground combat operations, as well as in training exercises.

Green-on-blue attacks have been a major problem during NATO's long years fighting alongside Afghan forces. The mission said some U.S. soldiers might have been hurt.

Camp Shaheen is the headquarters of the Afghan army's 209th Corps where around 150 Afghan soldiers and policemen were killed in April when it was stormed by Taliban fighters dressed in military uniforms and armed with suicide vests. The nationality of the other injured soldiers was not immediately known.

The 2017 report by West Point's Modern War Institute would indicate that little has changed, saying that 40 percent of the 102 insider attacks that occurred between 2007 and 2016 was the result of a personal grievance, while 25 percent the result of Taliban infiltration.

The insurgents are also targeting the worldwide coalition supporting the Afghan army.
