State awards first permits to grow and process medical marijuana

State to Announce Medical Marijuana Permits

Two companies have received permits to grow and process marijuana in Southwest Pennsylvania, the state Department of Health announced Tuesday.

The other grower licenses were issued to companies in Berks, Lackawanna, Lawrence, Luzerne, Fulton, Franklin, Clinton, Greene, Allegheny and Jefferson counties.

The Hall of Fame outside linebacker sees medical cannabis as a key pain management alternative to opioids and prescription drugs. The first round of permits for 27 dispensary permits should be announced by the end of next week.

"Growers (and) processors may not begin to grow medical marijuana until the department has deemed that they are operational", he said.

Among other provisions, the bill grandfathers in seven existing providers, renames them "medical marijuana treatment centers" (MMTCs) and requires the Department to license 10 new providers by October.

Jay-Z Announces New Album, '4:44'
If we're lucky, we'll get the full " Adnis " song soon enough, and now we know 4:44 the album will be ours in late June. After much speculation , Jay Z has finally officially announced that he does have an album on the way.

Spokeswoman April Hutcheson said that could have represented misspellings or similar issues in the original list that were cleaned up for the final one.

But the state still could face a lawsuit from personal-injury attorney John Morgan, who backed the constitutional amendment on medical marijuana that passed in 2016 with 71 percent of the vote. "I'm happy, excited." He said he believed Holistic Farms stood a good chance for success.

The Department of Health predicts patients will have access to medical marijuana in 2018.

The amendment gave doctors the authority to order marijuana for a broad swath of patients with debilitating conditions, including cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, post-traumatic stress disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

The announcement this afternoon is a landmark in developing Pennsylvania's program.

"There were many days when it seemed like this day would never come", Leach said.

The two were among 12 total permits awarded statewide as Pennsylvania becomes the latest state to implement medical marijuana regulations.

Leach said that the anecdotal evidence from people with Safe Harbor letters is that some patients have experienced "miraculous results".

Medical marijuana is not supported by all Pennsylvania lawmakers. But the worries aren't over, she said.

It also limits the number of retail locations each MMTC can open to 25 across the state, and divides that cap by region. Collins said DOH hasn't determined a timeline for phase two of the program's rollout.
