The shooting happened at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday in Palmdale, California, after deputies responded to a report of loud music, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Deputies then called for a sergeant to check on the injured deputy. Deputies opened fire on the dog, and one of the bullets may have ricochet off the pavement and struck the boy.

The boy died at a hospital, according to the sheriff's department.

The boy, Armando Garcia, 17, apparently tried to jump on the dog to prevent the aggressive dog from attacking police.

A spokesperson with the sheriff's department could not immediately describe the nature of the call to which the deputy had been responding or what had led to the shooting.

"He may have been struck by one of the skip rounds in what we're calling an extremely, extremely unfortunate incident", said the captain.

"At that point, two deputies engaged the dog in gunfire", he added.

Dashcam video shows officer firing 7 shots into Castile car
Bekuh Sibet, a 29-year-old waitress from nearby Richfield, said it was obvious to her from the video that Castile was complying. I don't know if it was in his pocket or in between the seats or the center console. "But it doesn't show the actual shooting".

The dog was transported to animal control Relatives of the teen said he did not own the dog, but was trying to remove him from the scene. The boy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information indicated the deputies didn't see the teen when he walked around the building, according to Bergner.

As the deputy awaited medical treatment, the dog became loose and again charged at deputies, two of whom opened fire, the sheriff's department said, NBC Los Angeles reported. According to the Los Angeles Times, Bergner said in a press conference the deputy's injury also appeared to have been from a skip round that had ricocheted off the ground. "Therefore, Department members shall not use firearms to shoot animals fighting with other animals (e.g., dogs)", Nishida said.
