Trump signs 'historic' bill to transform VA

Soldier Who Lost 4 Limbs Opening Vets Camp

Trump repeatedly promised during the election campaign to dismiss VA workers "who let our veterans down", and he cast Friday's bill signing as fulfillment of that promise. By signing this important piece of legislation into law, we will be one step closer to reforming VA for once and for all.

"As commander in chief, I will not accept substandard service for our great veterans", he said. "We have four very good people, and it's not that they're opposed. Our veterans have fulfilled their duty to this nation - and now we must fulfill our duty to them".

The act will also create a new Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection in response to concerns the new law may be used to inappropriately discipline whistleblowers, who helped expose the VA's scandals in 2014.

"I just want to say two very simple words: Thank you", Trump said to US veterans. The president said that the USA has a duty to help veterans and that "we will never forget what you all did for us, never". Bill Nelson (D-Florida), gives the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. David Shulkin, the ability to recoup bonuses awarded to employees who are found to have engaged in misconduct, and reduce the pensions of VA employees found guilty of felonies related to their employment at VA.

"Veterans were put on secret wait lists, given the wrong medication, given the bad treatments, and ignored in moments of crisis for them", he said.

"Veterans have been waiting for this day for years".

"What happened was a national disgrace and yet some of the employees involved in these scandals remained on the payrolls", Trump said.

"As you all know all too well, for many years the government failed to keep its promises to our veterans. They'd like to get certain changes and we'll see if we can take care of that".

Trump will be joined by several lawmakers during the signing ceremony, including Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act pushes to protect VA employees who expose problems and make it easier to fire workers for wrongdoing.
