Judiciary committee asks Lynch to disclose Clinton email conversations

Quick Takes

Four lawmakers - committee chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., along with the Crime and Terrorism Subcommittee chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and ranking Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I.

The committee also asked Lynch to clear up confusion surrounding a news report in late May which indicated that Russian intelligence obtained a document that "referred to an email supposedly written by the then-chair of the Democratic National Committee Rep".

It's asking her to disclose any conversations with Hillary Clinton's campaign and the DNC about the FBIs investigation into the 2016 democratic presidential nominee's use of a private email server.

The committee cites the testimony from former FBI Director James Comey where he indicates that he had lost faith in the credibility of the Department of Justice.

Lynch was widely criticized for meeting with former president Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac last summer while his wife was under criminal investigation for mishandling classified materials.

The senators have written to Benardo, Renteria, Lynch and Gail Scovell, general counsel for Open Society Foundations, to request any related emails or documents, and to ask whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation ever contacted them about the documents mentioned in the Times and Post reports.

The Washington Post claimed that by August of 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was confident the Russian report was a forgery.

Grassley has sought to expand the committee's probe into the firing of FBI Director James Comey to include the Justice Department under Barack Obama, arguing that President Donald Trump initially cited Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation as the reason for Comey's dismissal. Lynch would keep the Clinton investigation from going too far, according to several former officials familiar with the document. The FBI never interviewed Wasserman Schultz, Bernardo or Renteria about the alleged email.

Notably, the letter does not ask Lynch to comment on Comey's testimony about treating the email investigation as a "matter". However, the Post reported the documents were viewed within the Federal Bureau of Investigation as unreliable and possibly fake, and Renteria has said Russians used her to spread the false information.

A spokesman for Lynch said the former attorney general "will cooperate fully with this inquiry and respond directly to the Senate Judiciary Committee".

Sen. Lindsay Graham, who would have been present for classified testimony on the Russian Federation probe, has publicly stated that he doubted the purported Lynch document was fake.
