'Paddington' author Michael Bond dies at 91

Michael Bond, creator of Paddington Bear, has died aged 91

Michael Bond - the creator of the cuddly Paddington Bear that sparked a series of famous children's books - has died.

English author Bond wrote 150 books in total, with 25 additional stories about the marmalade-loving bear from Peru.

The books have sold some 35 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 40 languages.

Paddington Bear proved so popular that by 1965, Bond quit his BBC job to devote his full-time efforts to writing.

Bond also produced a BBC series adaptation of Paddington beginning in 1975. A second live-action Paddington film will hit United States theaters in early 2018. Reflecting on the bear's popularity, Bond told Pauli that "Paddington is eternally optimistic and always comes back for more, no matter how many times his hopes are dashed". What is your favorite Paddington Bear story?

Bond became a favorite author of children's literature after his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, turned out to be a big hit. In 1989, Hanna-Barbera and Central Independent Television released Paddington Bear as part of The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera - the 13-episode series featured the voices of Charlie Adler and Tim Curry. I didn't intend to write a book at all. "So Paddington, in a sense, was a refugee, and I do think there's no sadder sight than refugees".

"Glancing round in search of inspiration my gaze came to rest on Paddington, who gave me a hard stare from the mantelpiece, and the muse struck", Bond wrote in the Radio Times magazine in 2014. "He leaves a special legacy: long live the bear from darkest Peru". He told the Reading Museum that Paddington Bear was partially based on an image he remembered from World War II - kids fleeing London, which was being bombed, showing up at the Reading train station.

Last night, Mr Bonneville said it was poignant to have learned of Bond's death as filming finished on the second movie.

Bond's latest Paddington book, "Paddington's Finest Hour", was published in April.

Bond is survived by his wife Sue, two children, and four grandchildren.
