Federer said he struggled to shake off nerves early in his straight-sets win over Dusan Lajovic on Thursday.

Federer comfortably saw out the set to wrap up the win and continue his record of having never dropped a set in five matches against Zverev.

Federer barely put a foot wrong, winning 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 6-4 in almost two hours to set-up a fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov. An early break for Federer, courtesy of a sumptuous backhand victor, helped the Swiss to a 4-1 lead in the first set but Zverev responded, holding with some textbook serve-and-volley tennis before breaking-back when Federer sprayed a forehand high and wide.

But Federer had admitted prior to this match that he was unsure of what to expect from Zverev, a left-handed serve-volleyer who famously dumped Andy Murray out of this year's Australian Open, and it wasn't long before the German hit back.

It didn't go Zverev's way.

Zverev did well to battle back from an early break in the first set and force a tiebreak, but it was one-way traffic from that point. And the crowd were unbelievable. "No disrespect to him, and I think it's awesome, you know, but it's a little different for him", said a bemused Azarenka.

Federer was more than happy with his evening's work. "The first match was obviously cut short and didn't give me that much information about my game, but it did help me to save energy".

The German, however, has had a hard time in previous meetings with Federer, failing to win a single set in four encounters.

"He seemed pretty relaxed to me".

"It will be a tough match because every time that I have played him he has been stronger than the time before", Federer added. "So I thought they did it very well", he told reporters. "Against a serve-and-volley player, there are always going to be lobs, passing shots and drop shots".
