United Kingdom court rehears Charlie Gard case in light of new evidence

Court To Rehear Charlie Gard’s Case Guest Post

Judge Nicholas Francis gave the couple until Wednesday afternoon to present the evidence and set a new hearing for Thursday in a case that has drawn global attention.

Following the hearing, Gard family spokesman Alasdair Seton-Marsden, said: If Charlie is still fighting, (his parents) are still fighting.

But doctors said it was "right to explore" any new evidence and said they were seeking the court's view.

Charlie's parents had previously lost several appeals to bring him to the US for experimental treatment for his mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease that has left the boy brain damaged. His parents want him to undergo a trial therapy in America, but the doctors say it is experimental and wouldn't work.

Gard's parents, who submitted a petition of over 350,000 signatures demanding that they be allowed to take him to the United States for treatment, attended the hearing at the High Court in London.

Great Ormond Street Hospital applied for another court hearing because of "new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition".

May told the parliament last week that she was confident that the hospital would "consider any offers or new information that has come forward with consideration of the well-being of a desperately ill child".

A British court on Monday began re-examining the case of a terminally ill baby whose life support is due to be withdrawn at a London hospital, after Pope Francis and US Donald Trump intervened in the case.

British and European courts upheld rulings that the infant's life support should be ended to let him die with dignity. The rights of the child take primacy, rather than the rights of parents to make the call.

The judge asked the parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, to produce the evidence - about the effectiveness of the experimental treatment that could help their son - by Wednesday 2 p.m. local time (9 a.m. EDT).

Yates has said previously that, should the money raised for Charlie not be used on his treatment, it will be offered to support other children with similar genetic disorders. "There is a tremendous amount of hope here".

"Unfortunately, situations such as this, that involve withdrawing life-sustaining treatment are not uncommon and fall within the responsibilities of many paediatricians".

"He is our son". This has triggered a debate over who knows best for a baby's health. He rejected an attempt by the child's parents to have another judge hear the new evidence.

"I did my job", Francis said.

"As a mother, I could not stand by as Charlie's parents so bravely fought to seek life-saving care for their son", Foster continued.
