Hospital: Ailing China Nobel laureate in critical condition

The 61-year-old Nobel Peace Prize victor has been released from prison and is being treated for late-stage liver cancer at a university hospital in northeastern Liaoning province.

The renowned dissident and intellectual was hospitalised amid strong security measures around the beginning of June after he was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer following nearly nine years in prison.

Liu could become the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate to die in custody since German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky, who passed away in a hospital while held by the Nazis in 1938.

A statement released Saturday by the Shenyang hospital quoted the Western physicians as saying to Liu's Chinese doctors: "We have no better options - you've already done a very good job", under the headline "American, German experts claim Liu has no better options overseas".

Human rights lawyer Albert Ho called it a "marathon sit-in" aimed at sending a strong message to Beijing.

Coffee lovers rejoice! Coffee may help you live longer!
For those who consume 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily, there was an even stronger association of 18% less chance of death . Coffee drinkers may have healthier livers and better glucose control than non-coffee drinkers, say the researchers.

A foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, asked other countries at a daily news briefing "to respect China's national sovereignty and refrain from interfering in its domestic affairs due to an individual case".

He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in December 2009 for "subversion".

Liu is a poet and human rights activist who was arrested after writing "Charter '08", a manifesto calling for democratic reforms in China, and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his campaign for democracy and human rights.

Mo Zhixu, a family friend, told Efe that as far as he knew, Liu and his entourage continued to seek to leave China.

U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad, a former Iowa governor, told reporters June 28 in Beijing that he hoped the two sides could work together to allow Liu access to foreign medical care.

New York's 'summer of hell' won't affect Boston-much
At rail stations Monday morning, some commuters were unaware that their New Jersey Transit tickets would be cross-honored by PATH. Amtrak officials have said its two tubes will need to be closed for repairs within the next 15 years, possibly sooner.

The state-run Shenyang hospital has been steadily releasing more details on Liu's condition and treatment, revealing that his wife has been staying with him at the hospital and that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners have joined the medical team at the family's request.

"The national experts group's view is that the patient is in critical condition", the statement said.

The deterioration in Liu's health comes as the Chinese Foreign Ministry this week reiterated that it would not allow him to be transferred overseas for treatment.

Videos later appeared on YouTube, which is blocked in China, showing the German doctor seeming to praise China's care and saying that Liu could not receive better care in Germany.

The German statement also said the country's security services were steering Liu's treatment rather than the doctors.
