Connecticut's Sen. Blumenthal wants to question Trump Jr. at committee

One by one, President Trump's surrogates have dismissed a report by the New York Times showing emails between Trump Jr. and a business associate who indicated that the Russian lawyer had compromising information about Hillary Clinton.

On Thursday, overseas, President Trump defended his son, claiming, "most people would have taken that meeting".

So far acknowledged in attendance: Trump Jr., Kushner, Manafort, Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, Akhmetshin and publicist Rob Goldstone, who helped set up the meeting.

Speaking with the AP, Akhmetshin said Veselnitskaya provided documents she claimed showed people with ties to Russian Federation were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting the Clinton campaign.

On Friday, NBC News reported that a former Soviet counter-intelligence officer was also at the meeting, a man who us officials believe still has ongoing ties to Russian intelligence.

His conviction in late 2009 stemmed from his co-authorship of a manifesto calling for human rights and political reform in China. For that, he said , he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize , but also received subversion charges and an 11-year prison sentence.

He asked reporters on Air Force One what more he could have done.

Trump Jr. did not disclose the presence of the lobbyist at the meeting, which took place at Trump Tower in NY and also included Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and campaign chair Paul Manafort.

Blumenthal said he is both "gratified and pleased"' that Trump Jr. and Manafort will appear in front of the committee.

If this is the best defense the Trump team has to offer, the White House is in very serious trouble indeed.

Akhmetshin's presence was not previously disclosed by Trump Jr., who's come under fire for taking the meeting previous year.

Flores said the meeting should not have happened.
