Jimmy Carter hospitalized after collapsing from dehydration

Discharged Jimmy Carter

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was discharged on Friday from a hospital in Canada where he received treatment after becoming dehydrated while working at a charity house-building project, the Carter Center said. He said the president was doing OK. Carter, with his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, left St. Boniface General Hospital on Friday morning and went directly to Lyle Street.

A statement from the Carter Center, a not-for-profit organization founded by the former US president, said he wanted to attend the 8 a.m. devotional at the build site, helping kick off the day.

The oil glut, of which the USA shale boom in the US has contributed to, reduced oil prices and the revenues of oil producing economies.

"President Jimmy Carter has arrived at the build site to start the final day of the 2017 #HabitatCWP in Canada".

"[He] told us he's OK and being taken off site for observation", the spokesman said.

Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter are the organization's most prominent supporters, and since 1984 have built, renovated or repaired nearly 4,000 homes globally, according to the nonprofit's website.

The former president and his wife Rosalynn were in Edmonton, where Habitat is building 75 homes, from Monday to Wednesday before heading to Winnipeg, where the couple joined hundreds of volunteers working on 25 homes in the St James community, said Rowena Sara, a spokeswoman for the organisation.

The ban on female visitors specifically "has nothing to do with discrimination against women", the official told AFP by phone. Okinoshima island is home to an ancient religious site built in the 17th century and has three small sacred Shinto shrines.

He has been an active promoter of the organization and led building trips around the world. This week's project building houses in several Canadian communities is the 34th time the Carters have pitched in on Habitat projects, lending a hand and their name to promote the work.
