Turkey Marks First Anniversary of Failed Coup

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is prepared to turn his back on the EU and “initiate plan B”

"The majority of the Turkish people don't want the European Union anymore".

The President is confident that the people will not be upset if the membership will not.

"Most people don't appreciate the fact that the principles of law are being violated", said Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Bilgi University in Istanbul.

But in the 12 months that have passed since the coup, there has been growing criticism of the wide-ranging programme of retribution that has been meted out. "There are only two actual journalists in jail now".

With around a quarter of all judges and prosecutors sacked, there is now severe backlog in the court system, with thousands of cases yet to be processed. Meanwhile, 150,000 teachers, lawmakers, lawyers, academics and journalists lost their jobs and were effectively purged from society in the past year, analysts say.

'Your mediation not required on Kashmir': India makes it clear to China
China , which said Indian troops had stopped the construction, accused India of intruding into its territory. Opposition leaders have been criticising the government for the way it has handled China and Kashmir.

Erdogan was speaking nearly a year to the day since the July 15 attempted military coup. It is one of the many works to keep the memory of the martyrs alive.

"No one is jailed because of journalism here".

The defeated coup left 300 military and civilians martyred and almost 15,400 injured.

After the attempted coup, he hoped for a "better life and democracy".

"I don't like being stigmatised as a terrorist, I can easily say that".

The rebels, unwilling to carry out a Tiananmen Square-style massacre, backed down and were eventually arrested by forces loyal to Erdogan, an Islamist who has tried to roll back the secular nature of the modern Turkish state. Even recently they did it during the justice march.

At a meeting with media representatives, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced on July 14 that the government will demand the extension of the emergency rule from the parliament on July 18 as the current one expires on July 19.

"You are speaking more than me".

On July 15, military jets were witnessed flying over Ankara, and both the Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Bosphorus bridges in Istanbul were closed.

Gulen's statement came a day before Turkey marks the first anniversary of a military-led bid to seize power from Erdogan.
