20 dead in Yemen from Saudi-led coalition attack

Cholera epidemic kills over 1,800 in Yemen WHO

An airstrike by the Saudi-led coalition battling Yemeni rebels struck a vehicle packed with fleeing civilians on Tuesday, killing at least 11 people, Yemeni security officials said.

Yemeni officials said several women and children were among the casualties.

The attack took place in the country's embattled governorate of Taiz, and UNHCR said most of the fatalities were believed to be from the same family.

The war in Yemen shows no signs of stopping, with the Saudi-led coalition continuing its military campaign.

"We call on all parties to end this devastating conflict", the two United Nations organizations said in their statement.

On 25 March 2015, the Obama administration announced its support for the Saudi campaign against Houthi rebels and allied forces in Yemen.

The statement said the civilians had fled fighting in the nearby Mokha district, on the Red Sea coast.

Save the Children has warned that if the United Nations fails to include Saudi-led coalition on this year's list, it will set a risky precedent for other conflicts around the world. It accuses the rebels of using civilians as human shields.

The Yemen-based al-Qaida branch, seen by the United States as the global terror network's most unsafe branch, has exploited years of deadly conflict between Yemen's government and Houthi rebels to expand its presence, especially in Shabwa and Abyan provinces.

Another suspected coalition raid in Taez province in May was reported to have killed more than 20 civilians. "UNHCR, as the lead agency for protection under the coordinated humanitarian response in Yemen, has been appealing to parties to the conflict to ensure their utmost in the protection of civilians and the mitigation of suffering".

Repeated attempts to bring about a political solution to the conflict, including a series of UN-mediated peace talks, have failed.

The coalition has since March 2015 been targeting Houthi rebels fighting pro-government forces in Yemen in the country's deadly civil war and worldwide rights groups accuse it of bombing civilian gatherings, markets, hospitals and residential areas across the country.
