Sony posts 181 percent profit surge for Q1 2017

Sony's semiconductor division - which includes sensors - posted profit of 55.4 billion yen, a reverse of last year's loss.

1, an 80.9 billion yen ($735 million) April-June profit, up dramatically from 21.2 billion yen the same period a year ago.

It retained projections for net profit of 255 billion yen, more than triple that of the previous year when it wrote down the value of its US film business, while operating profit is expected to surge 73.2 percent to reach the 500 billion yen goal.

The results are bound to please investors, who last week drove Sony's shares to a year-to-date high, betting that annual operating profit will eclipse the record 525 billion yen marked in fiscal 1997.

Sony adds that Network Revenue rose 34% year-on-year. This significant increase was primarily due to increases in Financial Services and Semiconductors segment sales. Sales also experienced a 17% increase on a constant currency basis over last year's ¥141.9 billion ($1.29 billion).

- Visual and Media, which houses its mobile game apps, saw revenue increase to $435.6 million (48.4 billion yen), up 46.4 percent from the first quarter of 2016 when revenue totaled $305.8 million (33.05 billion yen). Sales grew 15% to ¥1.86 trillion (~$16.86 billion).
