World Trade Center Victim Identified Nearly 16 Years After 9/11 Terror Attacks

The family of the man have requested that they keep his name private and out of the public, a NY medical examiner's office said yesterday.

The man's name was being withheld upon request from his family. He is the 1,641st victim of the 2,753 killed at the lower Manhattan site that day to be identified.

It is the first new identification made since March 2015. He worked on the 97th floor of the 110-story South Tower.

The remains of 1,641 victims have been identified so far - 40% are still unidentified.

Advances in DNA extraction and testing technology helped confirm the victim's identity, the medical examiner's office said. Most of the DNA profiles generated belong to previously identified victims.

During that time, DNA technology has advanced alongside the multi-million dollar effort to try and connect 21,900 found pieces of remains to the lives they represent.

Over time, the medical examiner's office came to use a process that involves pulverizing the fragments to extract DNA, then comparing it to the office's collection of genetic material from victims or their relatives.

In total, the four coordinated September 11 terror attacks killed 2,996 people in NY, at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and left thousands more injured.

Aside from the attack in NY, an American Airlines flight crashed into the Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia, killing 187 people.

Another flight, United 93, was also taken over and believed to be heading for Washington DC, but it crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers and crew tried to regain control.
