Futures Fall on N. Korea Worries

Stocks faded into the close Tuesday spooked by a comment from President Trump about the North Korea situation

The Dow Jones industrial average appeared to be on track for an 10th straight gain - one short of the all-time record - until Trump, speaking from his Bedminster, NJ, golf resort, promised to bring "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea if the country continues to threaten the US.

The financial index had risen earlier in the session after the Labor Department said US job openings, a measure of labor demand, jumped to a record high in June to the highest level since December 2000.

The TSX Composite was down 39.02 points or 0.26 percent, to 15,217.33.

The back-and-forth came on the heels of reports the United States intelligence community has determined North Korea has successfully produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles.

Overall, second-quarter results have been stronger than expected with analysts now expecting S&P 500 earnings to have expanded 11.8%, up from 8% at the start of July, Reuters reported.

The report said labor productivity climbed by 0.9 percent in the second quarter after inching up by a revised 0.1 percent in the first quarter. Microsoft also managed to avoid market selloff with a 0.5 percent increase.

Unit labor costs had been expected to climb by 1.2 percent compared to the 2.2 percent jump that had been reported for the previous quarter.

Considerable weakness was also visible among biotech stocks, as reflected by the 1.6% slump by the NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index.
