Watch a timelapse video of the Perseid meteor shower

If you can see through the clouds, there's a meteor shower happening tonight in Ireland

The Perseid shower is expected to last until August 24.

Experts had warned that a three-quarters-full moon might obscure the celestial delight, but astronomers and casual stargazers alike were not left disappointed with numerous sightings from around the country.

While a bright moon might affect the Perseids' visibility to some degree, the meteor shower should still be outstanding because of a significant number of bright and colorful fireballs, the museum said.

Shed from the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle, the annual show brings the brightest shooting stars we see in the United Kingdom and this August didn't disappoint. Best thing to do is try and stay up late till midnight or even later, as that will give you the best shot to catch the meteors.

You needn't worry about an Armageddon / Deep Impact-type scenario happening, as most of the showers are no bigger than a grain of sand.

The Perseids have been observed for at least 2,000 years and are associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 133 years.

The phenomenon is caused by debris from the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet entering the Earth's atmosphere and burning up, appearing as bright streaks of light crossing the sky.

"For the next few days you could expect to see some - but decreasing numbers".
