Hollywood records worst box office weekend in 16 years

Mayweather McGregor

Overall, the movie has grossed nearly $40 million.

For many, the weekend's top entertainment option was Saturday night's Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor match.

Nurmagomedov Calls For Bout With McGregor in December
Yeah, in the end, what happened in this match that made no sense ended up being a fight that made complete sense. Yet, despite the hatred on full display by both men, fans and celebrities expressed interest in this fight.

The biggest factor that caused the halt is because an already slow August witnessed no major new releases last weekend. While Ryan Reynolds and Samuel Jackson's The Hitman's Bodyguard and the horror hit-flick Annabelle: Creation ruled the top spots this weekend, the numbers weren't enough to stop the box office crash. This weekend, the only new release that cracked the top five was The Weinstein Company's animated film "Leap!", which released on 2,575 screens and took the No. 3 spot with a mere $4.7 million. It's the lowest total for a No. 1 film in any weekend this year. The other new movie in "wide" release was Sony's All Saints, which debuted in 16th place with $1.5 million, earning a horrid $1,832 per-screen average from 846 theaters.

The film became the highest-grossing superhero origin movie ever made last week, likely sparking its second wind. The Fathom Events simulcast of the fight was one of the more popular offerings in theaters, taking in $2.4 million from 481 screens. It earned a scant $5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Make no mistake about it, there was little foot traffic in theaters this weekend, but the story line will change in two weeks when "It" opens".

When and where to watch PV Sindhu final on Day 7
Overpowering the long rallies, the Japanese leveled the lead soon with her strong stamina and won the first game 21-19. It was Okuhara's first win over the 16th-ranked Nehwal in three career meetings.

This is also a 45 percent drop from the same weekend previous year that has contributed to a 14 percent overall drop in summer revenue compared to 2016.

Hurricane Harvey had a minimal effect on nationwide grosses. The Hitman's Bodyguard has now taken in $39.6 million domestically from a $30 million budget, although no worldwide box office data has been released tat this time. One of the biggest surprises of the weekend though was the expanding Wind River, which jumped from 10th place last weekend to fourth place this weekend with an estimated $4.4 million. In 2014, the first weekend in September made $66 million overall.

New Zealand retain Bledisloe Cup in thrilling fashion
Previous All Blacks sides under Hansen had a knack of overcoming big deficits and somehow winning games they should have lost. It took a second Beauden Barrett try three minutes from full time to spare New Zealand's blushes.

However, that figure could drop down to somewhere in the $9 million range when final figures are released.
