U.S. military: North Korea fires short-range missiles

North Korea is reported to have launched several missiles, heightening tensions

North Korea launched at least three ballistic missiles into the East Sea on Saturday morning, resuming a provocative act in a month despite Washington's diplomacy-first approach toward the belligerent regime. Pacific Command said the missiles did not pose a threat to the USA mainland or to the Pacific territory of Guam.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared Sunday that North Korea's latest missile test was a "provocative act" but said he still hopes to persuade Pyongyang to come to the negotiating table.

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the projectiles fired from the North's eastern coast flew about 155 miles, though it did not mention any failures.

In April 2009, Pyongyang launched a long-range rocket which flew over Japan in what it said was an attempt to put a satellite into orbit, but which was seen by the US, Japan and South Korea as a disguised test of a Taepodong-2.

The presidential office in Seoul said the US and South Korean militaries will proceed with their war games "even more thoroughly" in response to the launch.

New Zealand retain Bledisloe Cup in thrilling fashion
Previous All Blacks sides under Hansen had a knack of overcoming big deficits and somehow winning games they should have lost. It took a second Beauden Barrett try three minutes from full time to spare New Zealand's blushes.

"We are working with our interagency partners on a more detailed assessment and we will provide a public update if warranted", Commander Dave Benham, a spokesman for Pacific Command, said in a statement.

Shells hit islands standing in for South Korea's Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong islands while special forces landed in rubber boats or parachuted in and "wiped out the desperate enemy with various combat methods", the Korean Central News Agency said.

All three appeared to be short-range missiles, rather than the long-range types created to be able to strike the United States, and were launched from Kittaeryong on North Korea's east coast.

"Although the launches were no threat to Guam, it reminds us that we can not be complacent", said George Charfauros, the homeland security adviser on the United States territory.

North Korean state-run media said the country's military could strike the U.S. at any time and that neither Guam, Hawaii nor the USA mainland could avoid the "merciless strike".

"This is the most tense I've ever seen [it]", a North Korean official told Ripley.

The North's missiles have alarmed Japan since a Taepodong-1 overflew its territory in 1998.

The rival Koreas recently saw their always testy relationship get worse after Mr Trump traded warlike threats.
