According to several media reports, Detroit Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford has become the highest paid player in the NFL. The $27 million per year leapfrogs deals signed by both Derek Carr and Andrew Luck over the past few months.

But there's no more precious commodity in today's National Football League than a difference-making starting quarterback, and Stafford was the difference between winning and losing in a NFL-record eight games a year ago.

That amount reportedly includes an NFL-high $92m guaranteed and a record $50m signing bonus.

On December 13, 2015, Stafford reached 25,000 passing yards in his 90th career game, becoming the fastest quarterback to reach this milestone, surpassing the previous record held by Dan Marino of 92 games. Carr signed his deal in July.

Instead, the two determined sides found common ground right in the middle, and now they can focus on trying to get back to the playoffs this fall. The team's starting quarterback is nothing if not consistent, rarely pulling off an upset win yet nearly never losing to a team it ought to beat.
