North Korea nuke test poses threat to United States, says Trump

North Korea conducts first nuclear test since Trump took power

The hydrogen bomb test ordered by leader Kim Jong Un was a "perfect success" and was a "meaningful" step in completing the country's nuclear weapons programme, North Korean state television said.

Pyongyang claims that it has had to carry out only small tests because it does not have the facilities or space that the United States, China or Russian Federation had for their nuclear tests - North Korea is a small country, and claims that if it tested a larger device underground, it would create risks for the country itself. Subsequent reports from the U.S. Geological Survey agency said the blast reached a magnitude of 6.3, indicating a significant increase in yield from any of the North's previous nuclear tests.

Trump tweets that North Korea "has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success".

Trump also rebuked South Korea on Twitter, saying "their talk of appeasement with North Korea won't work, they (North Korea) only understand one thing".

Energy from Sunday's explosion was about six times stronger in force than the nuclear test conducted by Pyongyang last September, the weather agency said.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis issued a warning to North Korea Sunday afternoon following the North's testing of a powerful nuclear bomb, vowing a "massive military response" if the rogue nation threatens the U.S., CNN reported.

I'm very much of the view that every diplomatic effort needs be pursued, that's why we need to engage China, but we need to engage China in how they relate to North Korea'. Kim's regime has said it won't give up its nuclear weapons and missile program until the U.S. drops its "hostile" policies such as joint military drills with South Korea that ended last week. "Only North Korea can make this decision".

They also need to forge chains of interconnected development and seek strength in unity, the Chinese president continued.

The USGS said a second, 4.1-magnitude seismic event occurred 22 kilometers northeast of Sungjibaegam.

Kim, according to the statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, claimed that "all components of the H-bomb were homemade. thus enabling the country to produce powerful nuclear weapons as many as it wants".

North Korea is thought to have a growing arsenal of nuclear bombs and has spent decades trying to flawless a multistage, long-range missile to eventually carry smaller versions of those bombs. "Not all of that attention has been helpful", said Adam Mount, a North Korea expert and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

In the 12 days since Washington praised Pyongyang's "restraint" and held out the prospect of early talks, the North has fired three short-range missiles, sent another one soaring over Japan and detonated what appears to be a full-fledged thermonuclear device.

"Today's nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is an extremely regrettable act".

The first suggestion that this was to be a far from normal Sunday in the region came when seismologists' equipment started picking up readings of an earth tremor in the area where North Korea has conducted nuclear tests before.

Russia's foreign ministry said North Korea's action "deserves the strongest condemnation".

Australia has condemned North Korea's "flagrant defiance" of UN Security Council resolutions and urged the world body to take further action against the "dangerous pariah regime".

The Security Council also met last week after North Korea shot a missile that overflew the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop's office reiterated the need for sanctions on North Korea in the wake of the test.

Hydrogen or H-bombs, also known as thermonuclear weapons, work on fusion and are far more powerful, with a nuclear blast taking place first to create the intense temperatures required.

North Korea says it has developed hydrogen bomb to suit ICBM
North Korea says it has successfully tested a nuclear weapon that could be loaded onto a long-range missile. He earlier said that North Korea would be crossing a "red line" if it weaponises a nuclear-tipped ICBM.
