Turkey: Iraq's Kurds Will Pay 'price' for Independence Vote

US troops using new base in Iraqi Kurdistan: Officials

Kirkuk Governor Najmaddin Kareem said he had no intention of following Baghdad's dismissal order, issued at the behest of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Move to remove Najm Eddine Karim follows parliamentarians' rejection of Kurdish plans to hold independence referendum.

The Government of Baghdad and the states in the region don't agree with the independence of the Kurds in Iraq, with hundreds of thousands of ethnic Kurds living in Iran, Turkey or Syria, a possible independence of this impressive community will do nothing but encourage other ethnic groups to do the same.

Iraqi Kurdistan has effectively been a semi-autonomous state since the fall of Saddam Hussein more than a decade ago, but support for full independence has always been opposed by Turkey, Iran and Syria, who fear it could fan separatist uprisings among their own ethnic Kurds.

Death toll reaches 50 in twin attacks in southern Iraq
It occurs in aftermath of a visit of iraqi prime minister, Haider Al-Abadi, in province of Dhi Qar, in particular, to Nasiriyya. More than 80 people were injured in the attacks, many of them seriously, and the death toll could rise, health officials said.

The next target of the Iraqi government might be Hawija District in southern Kirkuk Governorate, a referendum at such a time can do nothing but harm for the current situation.

Israel's apparent support for the referendum has been roundly condemned in pro-government Turkish media.

"He is an elected governor of the council of Kirkuk", said Hoshyar Zebari, a close adviser to Kurdish President Massoud Barzani. "This basically mean that the current leaders of Iraq don't want us to be their partners".

'Barzani's referendum decision is a historic mistake.

Zebari said on Thursday that the vote would still be held in Kirkuk.

Hussein al-Maliki says that all Kurdish lawmakers boycotted Thursday's session, while Arab lawmakers voted in favor.

Asked whether parliament had the right to dismiss Kareem, Suhail referred to an article in Iraq's constitution which parliament used as the legal basis for the vote.

Kurdistan Region's High Committee of Referendum announced earlier that the poll will be held on Sept 25. "The government has not been able to display a determined stance against the north Iraqi referendum", said main oppotion Republican People's Party (CHP) spokesperson Bülent Tezcan on September 13.
