Three female Google staff file suit over sexual discrimination

Google Hit With Class Action Lawsuit Over Gender Discrimination

Three women, all former employees, filed a class action suit against Google on September 14, alleging that women are paid less than men at the search giant and are routinely shoved into lower paying jobs despite excellent performance and qualifications. In 2015, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs surveyed all 21,000 employees of Google's Mountain View office and found women were paid less in almost every job classification, according to documents filed in the suit. She says she quit Google in 2014 after male engineers with similar experience were hired to higher-paying job levels and she was denied a promotion despite excellent performance reviews.

In January, the US Department of Labour filed a lawsuit against Google, requesting it release its salary data and documents to the government - and in April it revealed it had substantial evidence it underpaid its female employees. These investigations show that women at the company earn less than men in every field. "The lawsuit appears to be the first to make class action sex bias claims against Google", according to Reuters.

The legal action by three female employees seeks class-action status to cover all women employed by the Mountain View search giant in the past four years.

Take Medicare as an example: Medicare, which began in 1965, was initially expected to cost $9 billion annually by 1990. Sanders' team of drafters told ThinkProgress.org they will release the funding in a "separate white paper".

The lawsuit against Google details gender discrimination women employees have faced.

Google is being sued for underpaying women and denying them promotion opportunities, the Verge reported.

The complaint suggests that Google believes a woman's place is in frontend software engineering. Scigliano maintained that job levels and promotions at the company were determined through "rigorous" committees and undergo review that includes checking for gender bias.

Tech company hasn't recovered from the controversy which started when one of its engineers wrote a meme, stating that the biological difference between men and women is the main cause of gender gap at tech industry. He said he was inspired to focus on Google after learning of the company's fight with the Labor Department.

This comes at a time when there has been much talk about the way women employees are paid and discriminated against, as well as about work environments not being diverse enough. The suit aims to represent thousands of Google employees in California.

Gina Scigliano, a Google spokesperson, said in a statement to NPR that "we disagree with the central allegations" in the lawsuit. Among other allegations, the plaintiffs accuse Google of violating the California Equal Pay Act.
