Talks or takeover? Next steps in Catalonia crisis

People raise their hands painted in white during a protest in favor of talks and dialogue in Sant Jaume square in Barcelona Spain Saturday Oct. 7 2017. Thousands are gathering at simultaneous rallies in Madrid and Barcelona in a call for dialogue amid

After an illegal referendum over independence was held last Sunday, several companies chose to move their headquarters away from this Spanish northeastern region.

"Catalonia belongs to us all, and not just to the nationalists", said Álex Ramos, of the anti-separatist Catalan Civil Society, which organised the protest. This "legal position" establishes the principle according to which a State born out of secession within the EU would not automatically be considered as part of the Union.

"It is expected that Puigdemont will on Tuesday say an independence bid in the future will be considered, which is a dramatic step back from expectations last week that a declaration of independence is imminent".

It's believed he could use the opportunity to declare independence.

But there was intense speculation on Monday about whether Puigdemont would go ahead with such a provocative move - particularly in the light of a huge rally against independence in Barcelona at the weekend that exposed deep misgivings about his tactics among some sections of Catalan society.

Halep reaches China Open tennis semis
In the quarter-finals, she meets the victor between 11th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Russian Daria Kasatkina. In what was a tremendous comeback, she went on winning the next two sets to kill off Halep's second French Open title bid.

Merkel "affirmed her backing for the unity of Spain, and both sides exchanged views on ways in which internal Spanish dialogue can be boosted within the framework of the constitution", said the chancellor's spokesman Steffen Seibert.

Some 90% of Catalans who voted in a disputed referendum on Oct.1 backed independence. It is home to 7.5 million people and accounts for about a fifth of Spain's economy.

Recent opinion polls indicate that Catalans are split on independence, although regional leaders said police violence during the referendum turned many against Madrid.

To circumvent that ruling the Catalan President will now address the local Parliament on his own on Tuesday.

The PP's hardline attitude towards Mr Puigdemont has been given fresh momentum by Sunday's massive pro-Spanish unity rally in Barcelona.

Rajoy was forced to apologize on Friday, but many in Catalan say the crackdown has only fueled their desire for independence.

"We have to calculate very well what the reaction in Madrid will be when in the Parliament of Catalonia, independence will be declared", Mr Mas told the ABC. Millions of people have voted, who want to decide.

"Equally I hope the Madrid government will engage for the first time in meaningful talks - there is a lot of pressure on Madrid presently, and I think there is an opportunity for the European Union to facilitate a dialogue".

Asked if she would like to see the Scottish government recognise a declaration of independence from Catalonia, Sandra White MSP, who was in Catalonia as an global observer of the referendum, told BuzzFeed News on Monday: "I'd like to see it, absolutely".

Rajoy says that he will consider employing any measure "allowed by the law" to stop the region's separatists.
