Hurricane Ophelia was "accelerating" in the Atlantic as it marched toward Europe Friday morning (Oct. 13), according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.

On Thursday afternoon, Ophelia's core was located about 715 miles southwest of the Azores, where it was virtually stationary.

Farther to the east, Ireland and the United Kingdom are also watching Ophelia's track, which could bring hurricane conditions to some areas there early next week.

The weather will remain unsettled ahead of the storm's coming, with temperatures reaching 20C at times. However, as CNN reports, Ophelia is much farther north than the average hurricane, meaning it's not subject to tropical east-to-west-moving winds, and can instead drift north and east.

Met Office and Channel 5 forecaster Chris Page said Hurricane Ophelia has been upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane.

The NHC says Ophelia is barely moving and is continuing to strengthening, now boasting top sustained winds of 100 miles per hour.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, though forecasters say residents of the eastern Azores should keep an eye on the storm.

The hurricane center's five-day forecast, which can change, has Ophelia heading toward the British Isles by Monday.

While the hurricane may lose momentum over the weekend, Ophelia will likely bring at least strong winds and rain to Ireland next week.

The latest NOAA 5am update shows maximum sustained winds are near 85 miles per hour with the highest gusts.

Ophelia is forecast to transition to an extratropical storm by Monday - but it could still be at hurricane strength as it moves very close to Ireland and Great Britain on Monday and Tuesday, the hurricane center said.
