Tottenham Boss Mauricio Pochettino Brands Pep Guardiola 'Disrespectful' Over Harry Kane Comments

Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur is challenged by Pedro of Chelsea during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is unimpressed by Pep Guardiola's suggestion that Spurs are over-reliant on Harry Kane, saying he was never disrespectful to the Manchester City manager by calling Barcelona a "Lionel Messi team" when he was in Spain.

Speaking after Manchester City's 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Guardiola was asked for his views on City's title rivals.

The Tottenham and England man beat Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku to the award after scoring six times in four games.

But despite his frustration with Guardiola's comment, Pochettino admitted it was unlikely to motivate his team throughout the rest of the season.

Barcelona chief Grau: We have the money to buy Coutinho in January
After missing the first seven games of Liverpool's campaign, the attacking midfielder has scored in their last three matches. Jurgen Klopp does not want to sell the 25-year-old - and he has the full backing of the club's principal owner John W Henry.

Before the global break, Guardiola named "the Harry Kane team" alongside Chelsea and Manchester United as City's title rivals after the England worldwide scored six goals in four Premier League games in September to fire Tottenham into third behind the Manchester clubs. "When he is excited after an awesome victory against Chelsea, sometimes, he struggles to keep his position and be a gentleman".

"That comment does not affect me but in reality, it was very disrespectful for many people", he said. I think everyone deserves to be recognised as part of the success of the team.

"I think last season, the person who spoke most about appreciating the way Tottenham play was me", Guardiola said.

"It wasn't disrespectful to myself. Maybe I can answer something where I attack my team or my club, but never would I be disrespectful about Mauricio or Tottenham". We need to win trophies to say it's a massive period for us.

Guardiola, whose side are top of the Premier League ahead of Saturday's game against Stoke City, said he has always been quick to give credit to Tottenham, who finished second last season, one place above City. "If you're a manager you must show more, no?"

"It's about Txiki but I think we'd like him to stay", he said.

"It's a sad comment", said Tottenham boss Pochettino.

"I think Mauricio made a mistake. It is not right in today's football when we want to show fair play and respect". I figured he had a brain fart, and wasn't expressly trying to be disrespectful to Spurs or to the rest of the Harry Kane Team. "Never in my career have I not been respectful". "No", Pochettino replied. "He didn't call me ... yet".
