Cuomo signs bill banning use of e-cigarettes indoors

NY state banned vaping at public indoor spaces in a bill signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday.

NY joins a growing list of U.S. states, such as California, Connecticut and New Jersey, that has banned vaping in indoor public spaces such as bars and restaurants, in much the same way they restrict smoking.

The American Cancer Society thanked Cuomo for taking a step to protect the health of all New Yorkers.

The Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of e-cigarettes to minors in May 2016, after a broad set of new regulations was put in place.

The possible dangers of vaping have become a matter of debate and anxiety in past few years even though e cigarettes have become a popular norm now.

The bill is the latest passed by the State Legislature to combat the rise in e-cigarette and vaping by youths and in public places including bars, said Senate Health Committee Chairman Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City).

At Long Island Vape, in Huntington Station, the owner, Aman Singh, said the rules were unnecessary - the social mores that govern cigarettes already are in play when it comes to vapers, he said. "They don't feel like doing it anyway because its obnoxious". He added that most of his customers use it as a way to quit tobacco cigarettes. He said that would be a way to crackdown on sales of e-cigarettes to youths.

"We're out here trying to help people", Singh said, noting his worries about the impact the ban may have on his customers. "I think people will start smoking cigarettes again".
