Conquering the National Opioid Crisis

"The president echoed the message that many healthcare providers and elected officials say, which is, the best way to stop people from dying from overdoses and drug abuse is by not starting in the first place", Conway said in an appearance on Fox News after Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency.

"The president's decision to declare this epidemic a public health emergency is a positive step forward, and I'm hopeful it will lead to a better coordinated federal response to this crisis". Doing so would have unlocked funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "It is going to take all of us working together including parents, law enforcement, schools, churches, community groups, and government to turn this problem around, and the action items the President announced today will help on many fronts, including prevention, education, treatment and law enforcement".

Trump said the Department of Homeland Security and United States Postal Service have enhanced their investigation methods for imports of fentanyl, which is 50 times more deadly than heroin. "This epidemic is a national health emergency". And the numbers have been climbing steadily for years: More than 4,000 were in state-funded treatment for opioid abuse in 2013 - up from 399 in 2000. "People start taking these opioids for physical pain but they also ease mental pain and are very addictive". "We strongly urge the Administration to act further and release additional monies to bring this emergency to an end".

Grand jury approves first charges over alleged Russian Federation meddling in U.S. election
It wasn't immediately clear, for example, who is being charged and what crimes were allegedly committed. It also came after weeks of questions about the Justice Department's independence from the White House.

"Addressing it will require all of our effort, and it will require us to confront the crisis in all of its real complexity", Trump said during a speech in the East Room of the White House, where he was joined by first lady Melania Trump and New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie, chairman of a presidential commission on combating the crisis. Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the formal declaration was delayed because of the "in-depth legal process" required to do so.

"America is hemorrhaging lives by the day because of the opioid epidemic, but President Trump offered the country a Band-Aid when we need a tourniquet", said Sen. Among its many provisions, Trump's order gives governors more flexibility in how they use federal grants to address the crisis. "They're bad", he said. A statement from Christie said the commission will give Trump "an even more comprehensive set of recommendations" to fight opioids in a report to be issued November 1.

"This announcement makes me grateful that advocates for funding Opioid disorder treatments were heard, but bitterly disappointed that the solution was to play musical chairs with already stretched funds for general health initiatives", said Curtin in a written statement.

"Officials said the declaration would help fight abuse of prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl by expanding access to treatment, and curb delays in staffing the Department of Health and Human Services to help states grapple with the crisis".
