Events planned for National Drug Take Back Day

Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to potential accidental poisoning, misuse and overdose, according to officials.

■ Sponsor a national, twice-yearly event that effectively removes potentially risky expired, unused and unwanted prescription medicines from homes and the community.

Sponsors of the local collection event include the Drug Free Community Coalition, St. Joseph Youth Alliance, Buchanan County Sheriff's Department and the St. Joseph Police Department. No liquids, inhalers, patches, or syringes will be accepted.

"More people start down the path of addiction through the misuse of opioid prescription drugs than any other substance".

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the USA are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

The DEA says the effort helps prevent prescription drugs from getting into the wrong hands, or into rivers and streams after improper disposal.

The event will be held at Southgate Mall from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. The Indiana State Police Versailles Post will be one of many taking pills, no questions asked.

Some local law enforcement agencies-like the Marquette Police Department-are participating, as well.

Individuals can take pills and other solid forms of medication to one of nearly 5,000 collection sites manned by more than 4,000 partners nationwide.

"What we are able to do in cooperation with the DEA and National Drug Take-Back Day is get these unwanted prescription drugs, pills, capsules, and other items out of circulation".

The study shows that the majority of the abused prescription come from family and friends medicine cabinets.
