Panic in Covent Garden as 'black cab ploughs into pedestrians'

At least one victim appears to be trapped under the black cab in central London's Southampton Street after it mounted the pavement at around 5pm.

The Metropolitan Police force said it was believed to be a traffic collision and not terrorism.

The Transport for London authority said several roads were closed "due to a serious collision".

With the public on high alert following the attack in downtown Manhattan, social media was awash with people speculating about the Covent Garden crash.

London has been on a heightened state of alert after a number of vehicle-related incidents in the capital this year.

Officers and the other emergency services attended the scene.

Stuart Crichton of London Ambulance Service said: "A man was treated for a serious leg injury and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority".

Four people were injured in the incident, with three taken to hospital and a fourth treated at the scene, paramedics said.
