Saudi prince killed in helicopter crash near Yemen border

Saudi Arabia arrests 11 princes, including billionaire, in corruption crackdown

The prince was the son of Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud - who was the crown prince of Saudi Arabia from January to April in 2015.

The dramatic shake-up comes at a time of social and economic transformation in ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia, as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman steps up his reform drive for a post-oil era.

Prince Alwaleed, a nephew of the king and owner of investment firm Kingdom Holding, invests in firms such as Citigroup and Twitter. On the same day as the arrests, King Salman removed the powerful royal rival Prince Miteb bin Abdullah from his position as minister of the National Guard, giving Crown Prince Mohammed tighter control over the kingdom's security services.

The report added that commander of the Saudi navy Abdullah bin Sultan and the ministry of economy and planning, Adel bin Mohammed Faqih - both of whom were sacked on Saturday - were among those held for questioning.

Some of the 11 princes and 38 former government ministers, deputies and businessmen arrested in Saudi Arabia are reportedly being held at the hotel. It also sends a message that the crown prince has the full backing of his father, King Salman, to carry out sweeping anti-corruption reforms targeting senior royals and their business associates, who have always been seen as operating above the law.

Other names listed were of businessmen, including Bakr bin Laden, chairman of Saudi Binladin Group, Alwaleed Al Ibrahim, owner of television network MBC, and Khalid Al Mulheim, former director general at Saudi Arabian Airlines.

"People will be looking at any kind of worldwide holdings of the people who have been arrested, to see what will be the impact".

The commission will also be responsible for launching "investigations, issuing arrest warrants, travel bans, disclosing and freezing bank accounts and tracking funds".

The crash comes after Saudi Arabia on Saturday intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile near Riyadh's global airport after it was sacked from Yemen, in an escalation of the kingdom's war against Iran-backed Huthi rebels.
