Japan's 'Black Widow' sentenced to death for murder

Japan: A “black widow” sentenced to death for the murder of three husbands

A 70-year-old Japanese woman, known as the "black widow", has been given death sentence after she was found guilty of murdering her husband and two partners.

Chisako Kakehi, 70, has been condemned to the gallows for the murder of three men - including a husband - and the attempted murder of another, ending a high-profile case that has gripped the country.

Yesterday, presiding judge Akiko Nakagawa said: "It was an extremely malicious and shrewd crime borne only out of a greed for money".

According to the details provided, Kakehi used to poison her victims by making them drink a poisonous compound, drawing comparisons with the spider that kills its mates after copulation. "Even if I were executed tomorrow, I would die smiling", the accused told judges. Kakehi's lawyers plan to appeal the decision, reports the Guardian.

Disney would acquire Fox's movie studio, cable networks like FX, and global holdings including its 39 percent stake in Sky. The additional movie content from 20th Century Fox would make the service a big competitor to something like Netflix .

According to the BBC, Kakehi had three other husbands who all passed away, though she has not been charged with any crime in relation to their deaths.

While dismissing the possibility of suicide, accident or the involvement of persons other than Kakehi in the cases, the judge said the accused took extraordinary acts, such as inheritance procedures, soon after the incidents.

Her murderous web won't protect Japan's "black widow", who's been sentenced to hang after a months-long trial.

In July, she confessed to having killed her fourth husband. He died on Dec 28, 2013, only a month after their marriage.

During the trial Kakchi admitted to killing Isao Kakehi, saying he had not treated her well financially, but later retracted it.

Kakehi first married at the age of 24 and was involved with more than 10 men.

Kakehi later registered with a matchmaking service, specifically asking to meet wealthy men with an annual income of more than 10 million yen ($87,900).

She reportedly inherited around one billion yen (Rs 57 crore approximately) in all, although she later lost some of it through the stock market. But following his death in 1994, the business went bankrupt and her house was put up for auction, prompting her to ask neighbors for a loan.
