United States carriers will begin drills in rare show of force

More recently, U.S. Navy aircraft carriers have conducted dual carrier strike group operations in the Western Pacific including in the South China Sea, East China Sea and Philippine Sea.

North Korea will be at the top of the agenda as Trump tries to pressure Beijing into cracking down on Pyongyang.

USS Nimitz (CVN 68), and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) will commence a three-carrier strike force exercise in the Western Pacific this weekend.

The last time such drills were held was during the Valiant Shield exercises in 2006 and 2007, which took place off the coast of the USA territory of Guam, which hosts two US military bases, and aimed to develop the ability for the three strike groups to quickly work together should it become necessary.

These weapons tests, along with Trump's belligerent rhetoric, have escalated tensions to unprecedented levels since the end of the Korean War (1950-1953).

Since taking office, Trump has vowed to expand the fleet of US carriers, even as some military strategists and experts believe the massive ships would be increasingly vulnerable to modern Chinese and Russian weapons in any conflict.

Units assigned to the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in global waters in order to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's unique capability to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort.

China is one of North Korea's only allies.

Carrier commanders say the strike groups are kept combat ready at all times, with jet fighters and surveillance planes flying constantly from their flight decks to maintain a protective screen.

"A touch-and-go situation is prevailing in the peninsula due to the US and south Korean puppet forces' military provocations", the official Rodong Sinmun wrote. "It does demonstrate a capability that no other nation in the world can do", Joint Staff Director Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie Jr said earlier this month.

The statement did not rule out North Korea, who previously threatened to fire ballistic missiles off Guam, an American island in the Western Pacific, which hosts strategic USA military bases.

Kim was said to have examined it for a "long time" and warned the United States to cease its reckless actions, unless it wanted the North to follow through.
